MikeSell's - New Flavor Alert!

Like any good Daytonian, I usually go A-1 ape when Mikesell's comes out with a new flavor. In fact, they have yet to do something I don't like. Tuscan spice, new kettle chips flavors, cinnamon puffcorns - they can do no wrong. If you ask around Dayton, usually the only complaint is that they might make a wonderful flavor that's limited edition and haven't brought it back yet (ahem, Habanero Lime).

This weekend, the Dayton-born and bred company is releasing a Southwestern Queso cheese curl and a Beer Can Chicken groovy chip. I was unreasonably excited when I got a text Tuesday night with an offer to try the new flavors, just cooked and packaged earlier that day.

Beer Can Chicken:

Kudos, as usual forgetting even flavor distribution on each chip. This is an area that I feel like a lot of potato chip makers are lacking in. I was half-expecting an artificial smoke flavor, but that's not what I got. What I did get was a wonderful savory flavor that had hints of well-seasoned chicken skin. Frankly, I haven't eaten enough actual beer can chicken to tell you if they got the flavor spot on. Regardless, they're delicious and I will absolutely buy them again.

SW queso curls: They really did get the flavor spot on here, but the jalapeno flavor is a bit much for me. I've never been a fan of that particular flavor, but Mr. FvF had no problem inhaling two bags of these. They aren't spicy by any means, but there is a strong pepper flavor. To my knowledge, there are no puffs/curls available in a flavor like this.

Even though the queso curls weren't my personal favorite, sandwiching one between two of the beer can chicken chips was one of the better snack ideas I've had recently.

Snack Time - New Mikesell's Flavors and Giveaways!

Dayton's own Mikesell's just added two new flavors to their Kettle Cooked line, Sour Cream & Onionand Bold Jamaican Jerk. Now, the sour cream and onion are delicious, but not earth shattering.  The Jerk, however, are indeed, BOLD.  Spicy as shit, really.  Mr. FvF would basically eat pure fire, and usually mocks me when I say a food item is hot or spicy, but even he could admit these had a decent kick.  Until February, the Kettle Cooked line was limited to original, reduced fat, Groovy and Barbecue.  If I remember correctly, they had discontinued their Sour Cream & Onion flavor a few years ago, so I'm sure its second coming as a Kettle chip will be welcomed with open arms.

I'm not a huge potato chip fan, anyway, so I moved right onto the Cinnamon Toast Puffcorns.  Guess what, eaters?  You can't even get these yet.  Well, maybe you can because technically they came out on Friday.  But good luck finding them!  Come on, just let me feel special that I got something before the rest of the free market.  The important part here is that they're incredible.  Like, hide them from your toddler or eat them off of a floor that hasn't been freshly cleaned if you drop a few clean.  The cinnamon is the dominant flavor, but they still have the butteriness of the original Puffcorns, which gives the sugar and spice a really nice balance.

Want some free snacks?  Better yet, want some free snacks (I'm talking a lot of free snacks) and tickets to the Cincinnati Zoo?  Tell me about your favorite Mikesell's snack - chips, pretzels, puffcorns, curls, whatever.  I'll choose the winner at random on Friday March 8, so entries will be accepted until that day at 12noon Eastern time.  The prize will ship directly to the winner from the company, so Mikesell's lovers in any market are encouraged to apply.

Potato chip chicken

We've had some extra chips laying around ever since the MBQ practice round, so we decided to use what was left and coat some chicken in it. Mr. FvF said he'd had it before and loved it, so I figured it couldn't be too hard. Not much of a recipe, really. Crush up 1-2 cups of your favorite chips, drag some chicken breast through a butter or milk wash, then into the chip crumbs, and bake for about 30 minutes.

It sounded like a good idea, but I just wasn't impressed. We used sour cream & onion and there just wasn't enough flavor. I added extra salt to the chip crumbs, but that didn't do the trick. I think I may try this again with Mike Sell's Cheddar & Sour cream chips, and a good deal more salt. It was fine, but not "make again" good.
