Granny C's Bakery - Huber Heights, Ohio

Long story short, we made some big mistakes with a client and I needed to smooth things over. Nothing really says "mah bad" better than baked goods. I'm usually at a loss for family-owned bakeries in Huber (besides Old Glory, which is pretty out of my way) - but last week Dayton Dining/Dayton Most Metro had a little blurb about a place on 202 that I wanted to check out. It sits in the partially hot pink parking lot that used to be Patty Cakes, just past Harshman.

I picked out a myriad of goodies for my customer, then something for me and Mr. FvF to split after dinner. After I got to talking to the gals that work there (who couldn't have been sweeter), she stuffed another sweet into the cardboard box for me - an orange cupcake. She said to imagine Hostess's old orange-filled cupcakes, but a hundred times better.

She couldn't have been more spot-on in her recommendations. We split the orange cupcake - a mild orange cake topped and filled with orange icing and whipped cream, and the peanut butter cookie bar - a square of peanut butter cookie, topped with chocolate ganache, peanut butter frosting, and PB cookie crumbs.

Both of the sweet treats were spectacular. Frankly, much better than I was expecting. They were delightfully sweet without being so rich that it hurts either your teeth or your tummy, well-executed, and presented nicely. I know where I'll be going from now on for any kind of baked goods if I'm in the Huber Heights area - whether it's for a client or for myself.

Las Piramides - Huber Heights, Ohio

I scored a $20 gift certificate to this place from eReach Big Deals for only $10, so Mr. FvF and I treated ourselves to dinner Friday night after haircuts.

I've never had sub-par food or service at either of the Las Piramides locations (there's also one in Centerville), and this visit was no different. I talked to mister into venturing out and getting something different than a burrito. Here's the thing, eaters - when you go out for Mexican, don't go vanilla with your order and ask for a burrito or tacos. Unless you're getting real barbacoa (face meat!) in them, there's not much the kitchen can do to make those things fancy or different than you could have almost any place. Luckily, Las Piramides marks their chef's specialties with a little sombrero, so you know what the best bets are. So, the Mister went for the Chorizo Pollo - a seasoned, grilled chicken breast covered in crumbled chorizo and queso blanco.

I opted for the Enchiladas Rancheras - three corn tortillas stuffed with blended white cheese, covered in carnitas (shredded pork) and grilled peppers and onions, alongside guacamole salad and rice.

We were actually both a bit floored at how great the food was. Mr. FvF is a former Texan and is super picky about two things: barbecue and Mexican food. Even though we've had some great Mexican food at other local spots, he said this was by far the best he's had since living in San Antonio. Everything was perfectly seasoned, nothing overcooked, and the portions were somewhere between above average and big-fat-fatty. The service was tops, too. Not much of a language barrier, and the servers didn't mind answering questions about the menu, and came back to check on us often.

Also, they make a mean mojito, and had a mariachi playing some slow jamz for all of the lovers in the house. This kind of thing sometimes annoys me, but he was actually really good, and not all in your face when you're trying to eat. Mr. FvF thinks that guy gets more ass than David Lee Roth.

The Heights Cafe - Huber Heights, Ohio

A friend and I decided to pop in on an old networking colleague of ours who has now moved on to much more mellow pastures at The Heights Cafe in Huber Heights. I'm pretty sure the place has only opened within the last few months in the shopping center at Chambersburg, so, as with all start-ups, I wasn't expecting much. We figured we'd say hello, grab some coffee, and be on our way.

The location was very unassuming, but I was already impressed as we walked through the door. Muted, but modern decor - and nice, warm colors. A chalk board at the entrance told us about some specials and we were greeted by friendly employees right away. Before we even placed our coffee order, Chef Jeff LaFollette gave us a warm welcome as well. Not being a big coffee drinker, I just ordered a decaff latte, but wished I wasn't so full because their house-made pies and pastries looked absolutely amazing.

Turns out, we'd gotten their just in time for our buddy's lunch break, so we took a table together and caught up while she ate her lunch. She ordered the "Original 1762" sandwich - roast beef, horseradish sauce and cheddar on griddles white bread, which came with their own house-made potato chips (which I took the liberty of sampling one of - NOM!) and dill pickle chips.

Cheff Jeff and the owner, Eric Knowlton, eventually joined in our conversation, talking about plans for menu additions (for an already very encompassing menu) and how business was going. Most importantly, we got pie samples of the peanut butter pie I was eyeballing since we arrived. I know what you're thinking - but no, it's not just because our friend worked there - they actually do this on the regular for anyone! So, even if you're not Dayton's #1 food blogger (*brushes shoulders off*), you can still get yourself a sample. And trust me, you want one. You NEED one.

End result, I'm going to go ahead and give them 5 out of 5 sporks before I even eat a meal there. This is unprecedented on FvF history, but well-deserved, in my opinion. the staff is incredibly friendly, the menu is tops, great coffee (in your face, Starbucks) and devilishly good pies. I'll be back really, really soon just to order "Breakfast with Elvis," one of the most appetizing items I've ever seen on a menu. Griddlecakes, peanut butter, bananas - I'm drooling just thinking about it.

The Heights Cafe is currently working on a website and blog, and I've just requested that Urban Spoon add them as a HH restaurant so I can post the snapshots I got of their menu.
In the meantime, just go there and eat! They're at 6178 Chambersburg Rd in Huber Heights, Ohio and if I recall correctly, they're open Monday through Saturday from 9am until 3pm.
they serve fantastic food and make an effort to buy local, so this is a great business to support.
